6:00 pm
Jewish Community Center of San Francisco
3200 California Street
San Francisco
Tickets: $40 | Members $35

Join us for a lively dinner party with Evan Wolkenstein that puts a modern twist on preparation for the High Holy Days by taking you beyond guilt, mistakes and “right and wrong” to explore new ways to understand where you’ve been this year and where you’d like to go. Enjoy tasty food, relevant conversation, provocative storytelling, and some of the reflection you know is “good for you” at the start of a new year.

Evan Wolkenstein is the Director of Experiential Education at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay in San Francisco. He holds a MA in Jewish education from Hebrew University and a Certificate of Advanced Jewish Study from the Pardes Institute in Jerusalem. He has a passion for baroque lute, the sublime short story, and learning to brew the perfect cup.

Dinner catered by Bi-Rite: Beer, wine, and a good cocktail are included in the ticket price.

Ctrl + Alt + Del: Tashlique at Ocean Beach

Thursday, September 5, 2013
5:00 pm
FREE Event at Ocean Beach (between Fulton and Lincoln)
San Francisco

Join us for our modern spin on the 600 year old Rosh Hashanah ritual called Tashlih. This custom of ridding ourselves of all our bad vuggum from the previous year and getting a fresh start for the new one is traditionally enacted by tossing bread into the ocean. Join us by the shore at Ocean Beach for a brief, engaging ritual and joyful noise accompaniment from shofar (ram’s horn) blowers, bag pipers, members of The Jazz Mafia, Ralph Carney and members of the Ministers of Sound of the Saint John Will-I-Am Coltrane African Orthodox Church. Bring stale bread to share, a shofar if you have one, and blow along with some of San Francisco’s finest players.

*A Shofar is a ram’s horn sounded multiple times on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur as a wake-up call to change.

Presented in partnership with Reboot and GET FED, a program of the SFJCF, Interfaith Family, The Kitchen and Keshet. Made possible with the support of the Koret Foundation.
